This training is intended for University staff whose responsibilities include administration of federally sponsored research projects. This training will provide you with a better understanding of effort reporting requirements on federal sponsored research mandated by the Federal Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and supported by the University’s Effort Reporting policy.

The following will be addressed:

  • Explanation of federal requirements
  • Key points to the University’s effort reporting policy
  • What is effort?
  • What is Institutional Base Salary (IBS)
  • Why must effort be certified?
  • Standard for suitable means of verification
  • Committed effort
  • Actual effort vs. sponsored project budgets
  • Types of cost sharing
  • Salary reallocations
  • Examples of effort situations

This training is required to be taken prior to being granted ECC effort coordinator access and SPAR access for areas with sponsored research.

This training is intended for University faculty who serve as Principal Investigator on federally funded sponsored projects. This training will provide you with a better understanding of effort reporting requirements on federal sponsored research mandated by the Federal Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and supported by the University’s Effort Reporting policy.

The following will be addressed:

  • Explanation of federal requirements
  • Key points to the University’s effort reporting policy
  • What is effort and why the fuss?
  • How is effort determined, do I have to keep time records?
  • Examples of effort situations
  • Isn’t it all about the budget?
  • What is my responsibility in this process and what is my personal risk?
  • What is this cost sharing my administrator talks about?
  • Why do I have to certify other activities for research personnel that I have no knowledge of?

This training is intended for University staff whose job responsibilities require them to monitor effort reporting compliance for research faculty and staff in their area. This training will provide information regarding the responsibilities of an Effort Coordinator and guidance on navigating the ECC effort reporting application.

The following will be addressed:

  • Overview of effort reporting requirements
  • Effort certification schedule
  • Overview of ECC application
  • Effort Coordinator role and responsibilities
  • Principal Investigator responsibilities
  • Proxy and Designee assignments
  • Hands-on examples navigating ECC as an effort coordinator and PI

This training is required to be taken prior to being granted ECC effort coordinator access.

This training is intended for University staff whose job responsibilities require them to record labor distribution and/or cost sharing for salaried employees. This training will provide you with an understanding of the SPAR application, the University’s tool for recording labor distribution and cost sharing information for salaried employees and the basics on how to navigate the application.

The following will be addressed:

  • What is SPAR
  • SPAR Security Levels and Roles
  • How to get SPAR access
  • Review of different SPAR screens and how to navigate
  • Hands on examples of entering information into SPAR

This training is required to be taken prior to being granted SPAR access.

This training is intended for University staff whose job responsibilities require them to record labor distribution and cost sharing for salaried employees with sponsored research activity. This training will provide an explanation of the theory and mechanics of cost sharing on sponsored research projects in the SPAR application. Hands-on examples will include the entry of mandatory and voluntary cost sharing in varying scenarios affecting employees over and under the DHHS salary cap.

The following will be addressed:

  • Cost sharing terms and codes
  • Mandatory Cost Sharing (MCS) – DHHS salary cap and sample calculations
  • Voluntary Cost Sharing (VCS) situations
  • SPAR application calculations related to cost sharing and data entry rules
  • Hands-on examples of cost sharing scenarios

This training is required to be taken prior to being granted SPAR access if you are in an area with sponsored research activity.

This training will explain what proxy and designee assignments are and when they are required during the effort reporting process.

This training will provide information about the 90-day window for modifying effort distributions and process for requesting modifications outside of the 90-day window. You will be provided a brief overview of the federal guidelines and University policy, a review of the exception categories and required documentation to be included with the exception request.

This training will provide you with information and tools on how to monitor uncertified effort and avoid write offs during the effort certification period.

This training will provide you with an understanding of how faculty with salaries above the DHHS salary cap must have their SPARs adjusted to recognize additional cost sharing not captured for months when retroactive pay was received.
